DIY Spring Backyard Picked Wild Flower Arrangement

July 1, 2021 By Alaina No Comments

Sometimes all you need is a pair of garden sheers (or regular scissors) and a nice spring day walk in your backyard to create a cheerful flower arrangement. I know not everyone has a backyard with wild flowers growing, but you can easily pick some greenery off a bush or tree and use a pack of store bought flowers to design with. For me, it’s more about the process, rather than the ingredients. This is one of my favorite ways to de-stress and chill.

All but those little yellow spray roses were foraged from the back yard and from along side the road. I know it sounds like a strange place to look, but there are usually so many wild flowers growing along the road. Yes, they are mostly considered a weed but really who cares!

DIY wild flower arrangement

I treat wild flowers the same I would a store bought flower. Cut, process, then design. Always wear gloves when handling wild flowers because they did grow in nature, so there might be little bugs or thorns hiding. I will always cut then give the flower a good shake and blow into the petals to make sure there’s no bugs (ants were crawling all over some of these flowers so I had to really shake them out). You can also run the whole flower under water to knock off any bugs. If you think something looks weird remove it. Also if you are allergic to certain outdoor things, be cautious when handling wild flowers. Use your own judgement and you will be fine. I’ve been picking wild flowers for years and haven’t had any real issues.

Another thing about wild flowers is they tend to not last the longest, but I was very surprised with the ones I picked lasting so long (4 days). It does depend on when you pick the flowers in their blooming stage of life. If something has been outside blooming for a while, it might only last one day. But if you cut it right as it’s starting to bloom, it can last a good couple days. Also I like to pick grass looking pieces and greenery which will last a long time as long as you keep the arrangement watered.

For this arrangement I used oasis foam, but I try to use a flower frog or just a vase instead of foam.
